We are forced to pay taxes on our phone bills that are to be used to add additional infrastructure for rural internet capabilities. I just talked to my local Centurylink provider and was told that due to FCC budget cuts, there would be no additional infrastructure added in my area for at least the next year. If this is the case, how can they still collect the taxes? Where is this tax money going if not to provide such capabilities?

Matt,
I remember that post, it was a very sad day. Although, I didn't know you well personally at the time, I had grown to respect you and your efforts to start WISPA and all you were doing for the WISP industry. I'm sure your dad instilled these fine qualities in you and you have obviously made him proud with a massive volunteer effort for the entire WISP industry.
I'm proud to call you my friend and to be able to work with you for the last 8 years.

Where there is a Wisp, There is a way!

If one looks at the agenda, it's clear that Mr. Isenberg's conference is dominated by sponsor Google and its business and political agendas. (Note that a large percentage of the speakers -- including Susan Crawford, Larry Lessig, Mozilla, the Sunlight Foundation, etc. -- have received funding from Google.) Small businesses such as WISPs do not fit into Google's plans -- nor do media other than fiber. So, of course, Mr. Isenberg has gone out of his way to deprecate wireless and promote fiber as a medium.

First, I would like to tell that your place looks good and serene. :) With the help of mobile broadband networks, you get to enjoy internet even if you are surrounded by farm and ranch. I guess you are very much satisfied with your provider. Good luck to you!

I am glad I was there with you during those early days and an honored to have served with you to help build our industry. There is still much to accomplish. Looking back at what has been done let's me know we will continue to do what we need to do to make this a more mature and prospering broadband industry... and when I say "we" I mean all of WISPA. My part in WISPA is very limited now but it makes me happy to see it is running as we had envisioned it would. My concentration for the last year has been very much on making sure my own business would grow to the next level and it has. It has because of the wealth of knowledge this giant collaborative experiment has yielded. We are all greater than the sum of our parts and it is because we share knowledge. As long as we continue to embrace the advantages of the collective efforts and share our knowledge we will grow and prosper to become more and more respected and dominant players in the delivery of broadband. This is a fitting article on the day of Epiphany I think. Thanks for the dose of daily affirmation, Brother Larsen.

Happened upon your site, in a random ck for a better solution for Arlington Internet service. I keep wondering why for several yrs, there've been ads, showing folks on beaches, in mountains, next to cow pastures, etc..using their computers, out in the middle of nowhere; yet, here in Arlington, the services available are unreliable, sporatic and abt the same as was available 10 yrs ago, basically. I see people (on tv, yet) out on their patios, untethered by wires, drinking coffee and ckg email...and here I am, still on dialup, because the DSL and Wireless avail here, can be down and dialup is the only connection in town, still working. Your site came up, linked to Arlington's area code..so am hoping there's going to be some help coming? Put me in your email contacts, to let me know, if so. Thx & Happy New Year.
PS~I enjoyed your article. I used to drive a truck and wondered if you'd been at IBP or one of the meat pkg houses where I used to pick up...drop & hook..cows in boxes. Last few times, I think they had to raise them in the feed lots, before I got outta there! ;)

I should read your blog more often; thanks for taking the time to make your response to my comment. I'll definitely take a look at the white-paper.

As for giving students the opportunity to work on systems, helpdesk (think Geek Squad) positions are readily available but that's as far up the chain as things get :/ All the (Cisco) network gear isn't touched by any student AFAIK
